The tulip designs on this mug are adapted from a watercolor in the Museum’s collection by noted 17th-century botanical artist Jacob Marrel (Dutch, 1614-1681). The graceful tulip was introduced from Constantinople in 1551 and quickly became Europe’s favorite flower.
